The Archaeology of Israel

Caesarea

Caesarea Maritima was built by King Herod as a new Mediterranean port city. The ruins, including an amphitheatre, public baths, stadium and Herod's Palace itself, are a popular attraction.

Not so well known is the underwater museum - a trail around ancient wrecks, anchors and harbour works open to snorkelers and scuba-divers. You can hire equipment at the adjacent Diving Centre and get a guided tour - probably with Avi Baz - who will give you a set of waterproof maps and lead you along some or all of the four underwater trails.

The Caesarea underwater museum will be featured in a two-part series "What Lies Beneath" on BBC World Service in August 2008, when Win Scutt takes the underwater tour.
